Tucked away in a North Berkeley driveway is a tiny gateway into a vast universe of scents.
The vision of perfumer Mandy Aftel, the petite museum is spare and serene, yet packed with smells familiar and strange, as well as the history behind fragrance, its ingredients and its methods. Ms. Aftel was there during our visit, and while both she and her son were gracious and knowledgeable docents, your experience is mostly self-guided (which I loved). The exhibits are arranged in no particular order so you’re free to wander about and inspect whatever intrigues you.

One display invites you to smell an entire perfume, Aftel’s own Curious, deconstructed into individual top, middle and base notes, as well as the top, middle and base chords that make up the fragrance. Another pits natural forms of common scents like vanilla and rose against their synthetic counterparts. There are sets of wooden drawers filled with the raw ingredients from which scents are distilled (sarsaparilla, juniper berries, deertongue, pine resin, just to name a few).

The centerpiece is the perfume organ. A special series of shelves designed to hold all the tiny bottles of scents that can be used to concoct a fragrance, it’s organized into sections of top, base and middle notes. The sheer number of things to explore and smell was so exciting it made my heart race. It was a fascinating combination of familiar scents that were satisfying to smell in their pure forms (butter! olive absolute!), semi-rare scents you may have smelled but not as often (oud, clary sage, hinoki), and some that were downright strange and sounded like they came from outer space — methyl methyl anthranilate, gamma dodecalactone, opoponax absolute. For a word nerd like myself, taking in all these names as well as the scents added to the sense of intoxication. Even the way you smelled the scent contained in each tiny bottle, by lifting just the small, glass octagonal lid to your nose, felt ritualistic. As part of the tour, you are given three beautifully thick, letterpressed pieces of paper featuring the museum’s nose of David design which you may dip into your three favorite scents from the organ. I chose methyl methyl anthranilate, gamma dodecalactone, and perhaps my favorite, vetiverol.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;">

Between the tiny entrance and all the charming apothecary bottles with ‘smell me’ tags hanging from their necks, the place has a definite Alice in Wonderland vibe, and it’s not unlike falling down an rabbit hole. One hour later, I was not ready to leave (I hadn’t smelled every single scent in the organ!), and hadn’t really thought about the outside world at all since I’d entered. I loved that the entire experience was incredibly sensory and had nothing to do with technology. A delightful sign announcing the library of carefully collected books on fragrance — some quite old, some in French, some of the common housewives’ handbook variety — invited you to ‘Please experience and appreciate these actual printed materials.’

Mostly, everything smelled good. Even the hyraceum deposits — stone-like objects formed from the excrement of colonies of small, furry hyrax — smelled less outright awful than you might think. It brought to mind the barnyard-y brett smell of certain wines, and the exhibit pointed out that it has been collected for centuries and is used to lend a ‘dirty note’ to overly sweet or fresh smells. Couldn’t more things in life use a dirty note?

The museum is home to another olfactory oddity: ambergris. Ever since I learned of this prized substance, I’ve wanted to smell it. Being made up of whale excrement, it sounds vile, but is in fact highly sought-after and has been used in fragrances, incense and high-end artisan perfumes for centuries. Some articles describe people happening upon balls of ambergris on the beach — finds worth thousands. The combination of its strange origins and the miraculous chance to come into some money makes it sound like a plot device in an odd fairy tale, but I think the truth is that there are professional ambergris hunters who probably have made finding it more a science than the art of happenstance. In any case, I was excited to smell it. Rather than anything off-putting, this particular sample smelled like the essence of perfume smell. When you were a kid did you ever make a soda ‘suicide’ with all the different flavors combined? Ambergris smells like a perfume ‘suicide.’

To top off our visit, Mandy signed a copy of her book Essence & Alchemy that I picked up. Normally, I might not want to give such a detailed description of an experience, or read one before experiencing something myself. But in this case, there’s no risk of ruining the experience, since you need to follow your own nose to have it.

No joke these two songs came on back-to-back once when I was running and listening to music on shuffle. This speaks not only to my appreciation of music that encompasses both angular Manchester post-punk and daffy yacht rock, but also to the wide ranging powers we ascribe to love.
I was so sad to hear Charles Bradley passed away this weekend.
His music and voice were so powerful and unique. Have you ever loved a book so much you wanted to freeze time so it wouldn't end? I was feeling that way about Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. When I finished it I looked it up, as you do these days I guess, on Instagram. I was rewarded with these beautiful, warped, crystal-covered tomes by SF-based artist Alexis Arnold. She's invented the perfect way to stay in your favorite book forever. No kindles.
Two weeks ago, along with hundreds of thousands of other women (and men), I traveled to D.C. to be at the Women's March on Washington. It was an overwhelming experience that's hard to encapsulate, but here are a few thoughts.

\\ I was inspired in the days leading up to the march and at the march with the evolving platform of the Women's March, and their effort to make their leadership and speakers intersectional and representative. Aside from the obvious and necessary resistance to Trump, rising awareness that intersectional feminism is crucial is a major benefit of this protest and others that have followed.

\\ Hearing hundreds of thousands of people's voices, peaceful but insistent, rising through the streets stirred something communal and made me realize the importance of simply making noise and being heard. Let's let each other know we're out here and let those in power know we're out here.

\\ Speaking of hearing, there were too many people for us to get anywhere near enough to the stage to hear the speakers, but as we left the most crowded area to walk down the fast-filling mall, we happened upon a man with an FM radio that he was amplifying through a megaphone (maybe a good investment). With cell service sapped by too many people, this is a useful old-school protest protip.

\\ I took to heart the people who brought up, in the days after the march, the ways in which these protests were treated differently and policed less aggressively due to being perceived as largely white and female. Yes, it's good the administration had nothing negative to go on to counteract the narrative, but we must realize that outcome had also to do with privilege.

\\ So, I'll see all you nice white ladies at the next Black Lives Matter march, right? I also took this message to heart. When I got back to Oakland, I went to a human billboard protest organized by SURJ Bay Area, a group that organizes white allies to support Black Lives Matter and racial justice in general. Let's make plans to stay in the intersectional loop and keep showing up.

\\ Resisting involves getting our of your comfort zone. Traveling across the country wasn't something I'd planned on, and for some of us, just holding a sign or calling one of our Member of Congress is something we wouldn't normally do; but these times aren't normal, and it's up to us to step up and do things we otherwise wouldn't. Invest in some poster board and markers, save your MoCs phone numbers to your contacts, sign up for local protest group updates and gatherings (like Solidarity Sundays, which I highly recommend) — do whatever speaks to you as your form of resistance.

\\ But also, take a break. People keep comparing protesting and resisting to a marathon instead of a sprint, but it's also a relay. I've been so impressed with and inspired by people I know (personally and across social media). We're all keeping each other engaged. When I get tired or overwhelmed, I can see that you're still doing something and that keeps me engaged to come back after some necessary tuning out of the nightmare machine. Let's keep passing the baton to one another and cheering each other on from the sidelines when we need to take a rest.
I've never been to Baltimore, but these two songs give me lots of feelings about it. The dichotomies of city life versus country life. Trying to make it in the city. Plus, The Wire. Plus the way that Baltimoreans seem to pronounce the name of their city with the 't' somewhere between a 't' and a 'd' in a way you can't really achieve unless you're from there. Plus, John Waters.

Streets of Baltimore was written by Tompall Glaser and prolific Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard (whom I'm reading a lot about in this Waylon Jennings autobiography) and has been covered a lot. I haven't heard every version, but I'm still pretty sure GP's is my favorite all the same.Jodyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09275059428147863136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2363203489558341953.post-70746509967266583492016-09-18T09:12:00.000-07:002016-09-19T19:47:26.651-07:00Strong Week Links 34

It's a diverse and interesting mix of hits, originals whose covers were way more popular, funk, punk, foreign language songs and more. I know I couldn't, but I found myself seriously wondering if I could survive without music from any other decade.

"I think we are well-advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind's door at 4 a.m. of a bad might and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and the betrayals alike, forget what we whispered and what we screamed, forget who we were." — Joan Didion

"I'm related to that guy [the guy who made Reservoir Dogs] but I'm not that guy anymore. And one of the things I love about Reservoir Dogs is I like that guy who made that. And I really appreciate what he did. When I made Reservoir Dogs, I didn't know if I was ever going to make movies again, and I'd wanted to make movies my entire life. This guy gets to make movies because that guy did a good job." — Quentin Tarantino

Sometimes, when you set out to do something that takes a while, a creative endeavor or attaining some kind of goal or really just life, it’s such a long journey that by the time you get there, you wonder who it was who started out. It can be hard to believe you were the same you that started down the path to do the thing you’re doing now.

Didion and Tarantino both express this idea in a way that’s immediately viscerally graspable, but provokes a lot of thought on reflection. How have our ‘former selves’ set the stage for us to be who we currently think we are? Maybe it's eery, maybe it's painful, maybe we're grateful to them even though we feel so separate they could easily have been someone else. Maybe they made Reservoir Dogs and we didn't. We're not them, but we're tied to them.

Sometimes I think back to the way I made decisions when I was younger — risky but good decisions that have led me where I am whether in direct or circuitous ways — and I’m surprised. Would I make the same decisions now? In a way, I don’t think so. So I’m grateful for the way I used to make decisions. My former selves. Some of them were more fearless. And it’s proof I might not otherwise have of things I’m capable of. Hopefully soon, I won’t just be on nodding terms with them, they'll come to stare me in the face.

The Flax by Jeanne Engelhart line doesn’t just traffic in oversized, low-key chic linen, it traffics in positive vibes in the form of label affirmations. This is how you know you’re not only comfortably dressed in sensible, made-in-Lithuania fabric with an easy cut, you’re
living your best life each day you reach into your closet and pull out a garment that affirms your happiness, your beauty and your sense of self worth.

A fan of anything oversized, vintage and linen, I bought my first Flax a couple of years ago on eBay and have been searching for my next piece since. The tags give you a kind of ’collect them all’ desire. Maybe they’re cheesy, kooky, unlikely, silly. Yet others contend they’re powerful incantations. Say what you want about affirmations, but I’d say, say them.

They're good for jolting you out of your current perspective. It’s like practicing smiling when you’re feeling blah. Just by doing or saying something that’s positive, you may actually feel a bit better. As someone who tends to be a bit cynical and pessimistic by nature, I’ve found that I really need some self-convincing to allow myself to feel optimistic some days. If you’re interested in affirmations, and creating your own that really resonate with you, I highly recommend this book. When it comes down to it, affirmations don’t have to mean convincing yourself of something you don’t think is true; they can just be a way of focusing on one positive thing you can locate or want to bring into being. And why not get some linen on the side?

Spirit Wind Joshua Tree is an exceptional place. My brother and sister-in-law recently made it theirs and are finishing and restoring it. It was originally designed and built in the early 2000s as the dream home of a talented architect. After he lost it in the recession,
a couple took it over and got it a bit closer to its finished state. But now, Jonathan and Patty have taken it on and they are 100% the perfect people for the job. She’s a talented landscape architect/real estate agent/artist and my brother has excellent and exacting taste in everything from vinyl and vintage record players to elaborate home automation systems, all of which are finding their way into Spirit Wind (along with much more).

It’s surrounded by acres of desert land covered in Joshua trees, cholla and beavertail cactus (which are beautifully in bloom now that it's spring), and desert wildlife like quails, bunnies and coyotes.

I could go on and on about the place: the way it’s constructed to frame light according to the equinoxes and solstices, the open three-story construction that the architect and his climbing friends rapelled down, the foyer that’s meant to mimic the grand entrance of the Parthenon so that the inner chambers are only revealed after a journey and met with an increased sense of awe — the place was designed thoughtfully. But it’s also, modern, relaxed, beautiful. I hope to spend so many good times there with them, family and friends. And I’m also excited they're launching it as an Airbnb soon so more people will have a chance to experience the place and the desert around it. Stay tuned. In the meantime, here are some pics.
It's 79 beautiful degrees in Oakland right now. Multiple people contacted me to let me know about this: The War On Drugs covers Touch of Grey.
Even better: there's going to be a new Steve Gunn album out on Matador in June. I absolutely love his last release, Way Out Weather. So much so that I saw him twice at Fun Fun Fun Fest this past November. The new album art even features a geodesic dome.
I love a good, classic stripe. This new direct-to-consumer line (or ligne, rather) has all kinds of fashion backing with ex-Vogue editors at the helm and advisors from Manrepeller's Leandra Medine to Warby Parker and Rag & Bone execs, and a cool mix of classic and on-trend stripe styles.
Getting sort of obsessed with micro saving with this app. It's amazing how just adding a picture of the thing you're saving for adds motivation and makes it feel fun to check in on (mine's a desert trailer).

I tried on this perfume at the Ali Golden shop in Temescal Alley this weekend and I think I fell in love (mimosa flower).

Last month I listened to this podcast episode on a study that showed teen girls who changed the beauty products they used for just three days had lower levels of hormone disrupting chemicals. One of the things I really loved about the study and the coverage of it was that it focused on the active participation of young women in Salinas. By design they were involved not just in participating in the study, but
helping to set it up and run it, creating an opportunity for education about both science and beauty products.

It reinforced a lot of things I started thinking about a few years ago, which has really informed what I buy and use ever since. My collection isn't 100% natural — I still love products like Nars lipsticks, which I don’t think are known for being natural, and even with ‘natural’ products, different people have different ingredient list nuances they prefer. For me, it’s so easy to get bogged down in ingredient lists that I get overwhelmed to the point that I end up buying nothing or giving up and buying whatever. This happens to me whenever I look at the EWG Skin Deep Guide (one of the guests on the podcast was actually a researcher from Environmental Working Group). It's detailed and helpful, but can quickly start to feel like anything you might put on your face is toxic and you should just give up. So I aim for moderation and acceptance that nothing’s going to be perfect.

The study focused on products containing phthalates, parabens, triclosan and benzophenone-3, but usually my basic litmus test is that products are free of parabens and sodium laureth sulfate (a skin irritant). I feel like those are at least general indicators that a product errs more on the side of consciously unharmful ingredients.

I used to use Diorshow, which worked great and felt fancy, but ultimately, not worrying about putting chemicals near your eyes feels more luxe. Alima pure mascara works just as well for me — no smudging and it washes off easily. Unfortunately, it’s been a while since I’ve been swimming, so I can’t speak to how waterproof it is (when I’m not washing it off, that is), but I’ll report back this summer after much jumping into the water (hopefully). If I remember right, it comes off so easy that it pretty much just washes off when you’re in the water, which is fine with me - I’m really just trying to avoid the streaky goth mess look. You can always reapply aprés-swim.

This cleanser, which I use daily, is just now starting run out — and that’s travel size! When it comes to skincare and makeup that I’m not wearing to make a statement (like the best-ever, and not-very-natural Nars lip colors), I feel like less is more. This cleanser is light and not too soapy, which is great. I love the way these products smell, I love that they’re made with natural botanical ingredients by two herbalists and I love that their cute brick and mortar shop Earthship is in my neighborhood!

This has a relatively low score on EWG (which seems near impossible - I use the site as a rough guide, but if you followed it to a t, you’d never use anything) and it’s vegan, so - bonus if you’re vegan! It also advertises itself as gluten free, which I didn’t know was a concern for liquid eyeliner, but there you go. Anyways, it’s good to know they’re conscientious about their ingredients. I haven’t tried a ton of liquid eyeliners over the years, but this one works like I remember the classics from my punk rock days in high school working, which was basically what I was looking for.

I discovered this product in the months leading up to my wedding a few years ago. I like it because it feels like getting a mini facial at home (if you don’t have the time or money to have them done on the regular). The idea of a ‘peel’ can seem a little intense (there is also a sensitive version if the full-strength formula is too much for your skin), which is all the more reason using a product with natural ingredients appealed to me. Juice Beauty is pretty legit when it comes to the ingredients they use; they’ve done lines with Alicia Silverstone (anti-animal testing, check) and recently collaborated with none other than Gwyneth Paltrow on the newly launched goop Beauty line.

These are so versatile I have two. The light, sheer French Melon No. 2 pink I keep in my everyday bag and the darker-but-still-sheer Berry shade No. 4 I have on my desk at work. The No. 2 I use as a lip balm and blush because the light pink shade is so perfect for me.
There are lots more natural and organic products I'd love to try, like this from RMS Beauty and this line whose motto is "If you can't eat it, don't put it on your skin." Do you have any favorites?

Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sisters behind the complex and beautiful line Rodarte, are set to release a collaboration with H&M spinoff & Other Stories (now available stateside since first writing). It's set to drop next Thursday, and while that's exciting on its own (I've got my eye on the pajama shirts and shearling jacket), what really got my attention was the Spotify playlist they put together to coincide with the launch. They're girls after my own heart, and it's made up of exactly what i'd put on a roadtrip-ready mix — Gerry Rafferty aka the Raff, El Condor Pasa, Harry Nilsson — plus some stuff I wouldn't have thought of. Much like the way food always tastes better when someone else makes it for you, I find music has an extra bit of magic and appeal when someone else plays it for you. May finally be time to invest in one of those Radarte sweatshirts.Jodyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09275059428147863136noreply@blogger.com
